The Aberdyfi Commando Challenge Fun Run – Aberdyfi Community Council

Thursday 30th May-5.30

On Thursday 30th May, at 5.30pm the 10 Commando Challenge Fun Run will take place on Aberdyfi beach, starting on the slipway by the RNLI.It is a fun run for youngsters, up to the age of 17, to commemorate the bravery of the original 3 Troop ‘10’ Commandos, billeted in Aberdovey during World War Two.
The idea originated with their family members and its purpose is to keep alive the memories of those soldiers who bravely volunteered for ‘dangerous duties’. ‘10’ Commando was a troop of ‘Refugees from Oppression’ who fought mainly behind enemy lines, utilising their commando skills and fluency in German to achieve their mission objectives.

Mainly of German or Austrian nationality they were united in their desire to contribute to the Allied war effort.Billeted in private homes in Aberdyfi, they formed lasting friendships with the local community and two of them married local girls. The monument in Penhelyg Park bears witness to the affection felt by the inhabitants of Aberdyfi towards their wartime guests.

The Challenge Fun Run is an annual event, keeping alive powerful memories for generations to come. The course will start and finish at the lifeboat slipway and will comprise ‘out and back’ routes, totalling two miles for girls and boys aged 12 to 17, one mile out and back for boys and girls aged 7 to 11 and a ‘toddlers trot’ for children under 6, accompanied by parents.

All those taking part will receive keepsakes and there will be special trophies for the first girl and first boy to finish in the older classes. There will be entry fee of £1.00 per runner, which will be donated to the designated charity, ‘ Help for Heroes’.
