127 Fd. Regt. RA Service Record here at last Questions

Living History

At last I received my Dad’s service records (2nd. set). First set in 1990’s I was very pleased with the results. They comprised an A4 typed sheet with a simple list of events and explanatory letter, this started me doing further research.

Many replies to user enquiries on this forum, often tell them to get the MOD record, very good advice. Later I noticed some of these also explained that photo copies of the original documents are now included.

I decided to request a further copy, blow the expense. :biggrin: What a difference to see the actual records they are magic. I now have a little more knowledge, mainly down to this forum and it’s memebers. I would like to study the records slowly and ask a few questions at a time as I go through them so here goes. Starting with what looks to be the most staight forward of them “STATEMENT OF SRVICES OF:- Enlisted 11 Jan 33 at Durham, Posted 8/12 Bty., 2 Med Regt., RA., Mobilized as part of the BEF 2 Sep 39 etc. etc. see scan attached of actual record, note I have added comments in red.

My questions are;

1. Is the date he was evacuated noted on this record 2.6.40 “Dunkirk date”

According to the 2 Med. Regt. RA War diary “DUNKIRK, 29 May, Unit evacuated by small craft from beach at LA PANNE to England” Would the War diary refer to the ‘HQ and staff etc.’ and the 2 June 1940 be when he was actually evacuated. Then will the next date 17.6.40 be when he reported back to HQ in UK.

From here in 1942 with the 51st. HD 127 Fd. RA to North Africa, then this record picks up again, not sure why other pages show these service details but not as easy to read, joys to follow. :)

2. Dad was wounded on the 16 June 44 and as this record; evacuated to UK 18.6.44 what is the ‘Y’ list

3. When he recovered he was posted to the 171 Fd. 15.8.44 which according to their War diaries they were ‘Home’ based. Dad and family said he went back to Europe, causing some upset in the family, likely believing he may not return this time. Further on is a reference to “Draft R.E.P.L.P.29.11.44 What do these initials mean?

4. He is then on an ‘X’ list XIV 21.AG (21st. Army Group?) Emb. (Embarked?) UK 29.11.44 This appears to show he is shipped back out and later posted to his old unit 127 Fd. 5.12.44

Finaly R. A. Recs. (R.A. Records?) ‘Y’ list (again) Release 19.10.45 after 13 years not forgetting 12 days any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Bye Neil
