65th Chindit Old Comrades Association Reunion 2013

Living History

Well, Steve and I made the trip up to Walsall last Saturday and I have to report a fine evening was had by all, with even a sad B vegetarian like myself being finely catered for…

… But a sad thing to note was of the approximately 100 people in attendance only 10% were “known” Chindit Veterans… Steve advised me that this was a drop of about a third from last years reunion…

This is sadly to be expected…

I am not aware of any Longcloth veterans that made it to this one, but one Gentleman on our table made his first appearance at one of these events and was a great pleasure to converse with whilst to Steve’s right was an RAF officer who was attached to 77 brigade for Operation Thursday…

We did miss a couple of things that took place earlier in the day… COCA had arranged for a lecture by author Tony Redding during the afternoon and at an earlier point over at the National Arboretum some of the veterans and their families were in attendance for a Dakota low level flypast of the Chindit Memorial…

Paul Shenton of Friends of the Chindits organised the raffle of a veteran-signed copy Tony Redding’s book which raised over £200 for the funds… not quite the figure raised last year… ;)

One of the people with which I had a lengthy talk re my work was Roger Neal, PR Officer for the Burma Star Organisation and sculptor of the Chinthe bronze scheduled to adorn the Memorial later this year – he is seen holding the first (scaled down) model of it below…
