Burma Thai Railway POW

Living History

Hi all,

I have been researching one of my wifes relatives, WX9407 SGT Gerard Northey who was a POW on the Burma Thai Railway. He was in Singapore when it fell and ended up on the railway. He survived the war but came back blind and died not long after returning to Australia, obviously too far gone to recover. His son, which is my wifes relative, was very affected with seeing how his father came back and affected him greatly.

What I am trying to find out is some further detail on his time on the railway. I dont think his service record is going to reveal much as I have looked at a few other POW service records and dont go into detail. Would a unit diary possibly reveal more? Are there any other avenues to look at?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

BCT
