Indian Troops Fighting in the German Army Afrika Corps

Living History

Another little ditty from 7 Armoured Division Intelligence Summary No. 55 dated 1st July 1942

It is reported that during the Hacheim battles, and again on the 21st June, an Indian came up on the forward control link (on the wireless) on one of our Indian Armoured Car Regiments, spreading German propaganda. On being questioned this man said he was a deserter from the Indian Army, now a driver/operator in the German Army. It is again emphasised that THE ENEMY LISTENS TO EVERY WORD WE SPEAK ON THE WIRELESS. We know that he can understand when we use Hindustani and military Hindustani at that. All ranks should be warned of the great danger of employing Indian dialects under the impression that they are speaking in code.
