On Wednesday; 1st May 2013 during Labour Day a group of around 500 Voortrekkers (Scouts) from local schools all over Cape Town descended on the historical landmark Fort Wynyard in Cape Town to host an award giving parade for members which have accomplished special achievements as well as finishing specific training courses successfully.
The Command Bunker of the Cape Town Chapter of the Heritage Group is also based at Fort Wynyard. Before the parade commenced the Voortrekkers were briefed on the history of the Fort and also conducted a tour through the facility. During the tour the Heritage Group Bunker was also opened to the visitors during which they were briefed on the activities and purpose and goals of the Heritage Group.
It was a very good opportunity to market/promote the Heritage Group and to potentially procure new members, especially within the youth/teenage category. There are too many old hounds in the Heritage Group and young lively spirited members full of energy and enthusiasm are much needed. The Voortrekkers, full of excitement, absorbed all information with great enthusiasm and found the visit to the dark and damp underground bunker to be quite an adventurous experience. After the tour all gathered at the centre of the Fort to conduct their parade and award handing over ceremony.
One of the junior members of the Heritage Group, Zack du Plessis, also a Voortrekker, has received quite a few awards/distinctions during the ceremony of which his Verkenner (Special Scout) qualification was something outstanding. After 5 years of hard work Zack accomplished this special achievement and was promoted to the next level of the Voortrekker Organization. Many congratulations Zack, well done, all your Heritage Group comrades are very proud of you.
Zack was also given the task to take charge of the closing down/flag lowering ceremony of the parade.
Special thanks to two members of the Heritage Group; namely our RSM, Dewald le Roux and our Vice – Chairman; Zetef du Plessis (father of Zack) who were instrumental in organizing this visit to Fort Wynyard.
Also many special thanks to Lt. Col. Bob Visser, Commanding Officer of Cape Garrison Artillery(CGA) who has opened his base to this group of visitors. CGA has become a integral part of the Heritage Group family and without their support and blessing we will struggle to accomplish our goals.
Dewald had the task to co-ordinate the visit between the Voortrekkers and CGA and Zetef used the opportunity to market/promote the activities of the Heritage Group to the Voortrekkers. Hopefully we will soon see some new young members in our Group.
This conclude all activities and it is time to sign off; till next time.
Sincere regards to all members; friends and supporters.
