Pte Archibald McNaught 1st Airborne Division HQ

Living History

I am looking for any information, particularly photos, on my father Pte Archibald McNaught 6100188, one of the early volunteers for ‘special duties’, posted to 1st Airborne Division HQ on 14th Feb 1942. I know he trained at Ringway, was in North Africa in Tunisia near Soose, took part in the invasion of Sicily (his glider came down in the sea), was at Taranto, then Arnhem and finally Norway. Prior to Arnhem he was based at Fulbeck Hall and flew out of Barkston Heath in the first wave, parachuting into Arnhem. He defended the perimeter of the Hartenstein Hotel before escaping across the Rhine as part of the evacuation. I give talks to various groups and am putting one together on 1st Airborne and Arnhem to celebrate the 70th anniversary next year
